Shimonita is not just known for konnyaku and leeks, but also for profound history as an old, famous hotel town where people embraced hospitality and their unique culture.
Konnyaku/Devil's Tongue: Konnyaku/devil's tongue is made form konnyaku potatoes (colocasia esculenta), which Shimonita produces 90 % of the national share. Konnyaku is known as a healthy food which is low in calories and high in fiber. Konnyaku is often used in traditional Japanese cuisines but it is also used in different dishes nowadays. A famous example is the "konnyaku jello". Surprisingly, it is a tasty and healthy snack for both adults and children (Be advised when giving it to small children). I personally love the firm and thick texture of the jello. It is nothing like the jello made out of box. Konnyaku jello can be purchased in any grocery stores nearby! Try and see if you like it.

Shimonita negi: Shimonita negi is known as the king of negi/leek. Thanks to its sweet and savory flavor, Shimonita negi is popular throughout Japan, but particularly so in its place of origin, shimonita-machi. Shimonita negi is not only delicious but also for its nutritious facts. It contains high amount of protein only found in leeks and vitamin B and C. The price compared to other leeks is set slightly high, but it is totally worth the price.
