History of Kiryu dates back to the Jomon Era. Earthenwares, stone implements, and other relics of human life of the time were found in the area. Of those, ear accessories discovered at the Chiamigaito Ruins have been designated as important cultural assets of Japan. The City of Kiryu was founded in 1921 as the 84th city in Japan. Located at the south-eastern part of Gunma and adjacent to Ashikaga City of Tochigi, Kiryu has always been famous for its textile industry. From downtown Kiryu, you have a magnificient view of Mt. Akagi and other mountainous terrain shaped like a folding screen. Watarase and Kiryu Rivers run through the city, bringing rich natural environment to the people of Kiryu.
