Fireflies

Fireflies

In Japan, fireflies are known as a rare and precious insect since we cannot see them everywhere nowadays. So there are some rules to enjoy watching fireflies, such as refraining from attempting to catch them to take back home. However, other than that, you should absolutely enjoy the beautiful nature scenery.
Usually male fireflies use their lights to try and attract female fireflies which usually remain on leaves or grass, and answer back to the males by signaling with their lights. Around 8PM to 9PM is the most active time for them. After they enter their imago stage, the male’s lifetime is only around 10 days, and female’s is about 2 weeks.
The most popular kinds of firefly around Gunma are called Luciola cruciata and Luciola lateralis. Luciola lateralis’s radiation is less powerful while the term of blink is longer than Luciola cruciata.
