On the evening of Setsubun Day (February 3rd or 4th depending on the year), people open the doors of their houses and drive bad luck out of their homes by throwing handfuls of beans and shouting “Demons out! Good Luck in! The next day is the first day of spring. Bean throwing at Buddhist temples across Japan attracts many worshipers trying to catch their share of the thrown beans.
