"Make it an accessible orchestra" has been the tag line for the last 70 years for the Gunma Symphony Orchestra. It is fondly called Gunkyo. One of Gunkyo's features is the itinerant music classes called Ido Ongaku Kyoshitsu. It started on May 29, 1947 in Annaka City. This hometown orchestra has been offering full professional orchestra music to elementary and junior high schools where, for most students, it is a first encounter with such a performance. In FY2016, the music classes started at Itakura Junior High on April 26 and will last until March 2017, visiting 62 schools in total.
