Domestic Violence – You are not alone. Help is available.

Abusive behavior against one partner to another in an intimate relationship is called domestic violence. The partner could be lovers, fiancés, domestic partners, ex-spouses, or ex-boy/girlfriends. In these cases, abuse has many forms, including physical, psychological, sexual, and financial.

What is violence?

Examples of domestic violence include physical assault (hitting, pushing, shoving, etc.) but also take many forms. When one person in a relationship excessively controls the other or checks his/her cell phone repeatedly, it is also considered domestic violence. Here are some examples of abuse.

Physical assault

Hitting, pinching, kicking, throwing objects

Sexual abuse

Unwanted or forced kissing or sexual activity, refusing to use birth control

Financial abuse

Does not repay the money one borrowed from the other, takes away the other's credit cards

Psychological abuse

Verbal abuse, putdowns, insulting, yelling, keeping a partner from contacting friends, checking on a partner constantly, being obsessive and demanding a partner to stay with at all times, checking the partner's cell phone, threatening suicide if the partner leaves him/her

If you feel that any of the above applies to you, you are advised to consult any doubts and questions you may have about your relationship with someone you trust or public/private institutions that offer consultation services. The sooner, the better.
